The miniature highlands claim to be a reproduction of those cattle. They were smaller and predominantly black. Hundreds of years ago the remote rugged islands off the west coast of northern Scotland was home for the wild “Kyloe”, an ancestor of the present day Highland cattle. There was a smaller breed in the past but they have been crossbred with larger highlands to become one distinct breed. Highlands on the other hand are as far as i am aware just one breed today. ![]() The only one I know of that’s real is the short legged Dexter which has a form of dwarfism so they never get very tall and then there is another type of the breed that’s around the size of a Kerry cow. We also seemed to rescue every lost miniature horse I could. I suppose I was more of a farmer then rancher and had farm animals more for the fun of it although, one of my daughters, Cady, raised beef cattle, sheep, and a pig for 4-h. Mike was riding bulls when we met in high-school and continued to ride on his college team in Eastern South Dakota but has long had the itch to have cattle. So, we are always busy! Just 1 of the kids at home, Cooper, (half time) and grand kids here every day, but there are lots of hands when we need them. Mike runs a company and I work for a company out of New York from 8-5. on weekends and evenings because we also have full time jobs. We grew up here and although, I, Renee, left for 25 years, I came back and am living the dream. We are a combined family, with 7 kids and 9 grand kids and counting. We have a little family ranch just outside if Rapid City, South Dakota, with incredible views of the Black Hills, Mt, Rushmore and if you spin the other direction the beautiful Badlands. ![]()
